We are chuffed to bits that CAPTAIN BOB 3.8% amber ale has been recognised once again as an excellent ale by CAMRA. This year we closed the brewery for the day and headed into London to enjoy the experience of the GBBF trade session at Olympia.

A good time was had by all - especially after the awards were announced! Thank you all for your continued support and loyalty - if not for you, we would not brew!

MightyOak Gold & Silver in CAMRA's Beer of East Anglia Awards Gold & Silver in CAMRA's Beer of East Anglia Awards
26th February 2018

We are absolutely thrilled to have won Gold in the bitters category of CAMRA's Champion Beer of East Anglia awards with Captain Bob, our 3.8% traditional amber bitter, named after the famous East Anglian Captain, Bob Roberts who skippered the Thames Sailing Barge Cambria up and down the East Anglian coast and into London docks. Bob Roberts also wrote beautiful seafaring stories, five of which he read on the BBC's children's programme Jackanory, and sea shanties, which are sung to this day in Essex, Suffolk and beyond.

Oscar Wilde, our 3.7% mild named after the world famous Irish playwright, poet and author, also won a silver award in mild category. Oscar has previously won a host of other awards including two Gold awards in CAMRA's national mild category and the country's very top beer award, Supreme Champion Beer of Britain.

We want to say a huge thank you to all the beer lovers throughout Essex and beyond who voted for us again. Since our very first brew back in 1996 we've won numerous awards both national and regional, and we couldn't have done it without your support. We'd also like to thank all the wonderful publicans who buy our beer, making it possible for you to enjoy it. Thank you!

HRH The Pub is the Hub

It's not every day that Prince Charles is lucky enough to visit Essex, let alone in a beautiful 14th Century pub enjoying a pint of our Oscar Wilde!

Patron of 'The Pub is the Hub', HRH called into The Purleigh Bell to take a look at how the village uses the pub; art club, sewing club and yoga classes etc.

Our very own John Boyce was introduced to both Charles and Camilla and the prince enjoyed sipping a pint of Oscar Wilde, he was even heard to say that he must find a way to take the rest of it back with him!
